Comment on Multiple Airlines Ban In-Flight VoIP, is Cellular Coverage Next? by B. Lewis Zimmerman https://www.virtualpbx.com/blog/general-telephony/multiple-airlines-ban-in-flight-voip-will-cellular-coverage-follow-the-same-fate/#comment-63 Sat, 01 Feb 2014 13:27:11 +0000 http://blog.virtualpbx.com/?p=1627#comment-63 I traveled yesterday EWR-PBI, UAL 262, the equipment was an Airbus A320 Wi-Fi equipped. It was about half way through the flight before I realized the added service. UAL A320 was a heritage aircraft from United, the interior had been completely replaced so I imagine that is when they installed Wi-Fi. The charge for the service, $6.99 was fair and it worked great. I had a window seat, was able to take a shot of the port wing as we descended showing the air brake being applied, e-mailed the photo, to several friends, excellent quality. Also, browsed news sites, picked up several stories and e-mailed to friends. Didn’t attempt VoiP. UAL also shows in flight map of aircraft location on the Wi-Fi equipped device (Droid Razr Maxx), same as what is sometimes shown on seat back monitors. The A320 wasn’t equipped with any type of video screen. Didn’t try any type of streaming such as a movie to the phone. Their new seats are very thin but comfortable. At the lower part of the seat back, where normally you would find a webbing holding magazines and emergency cards, that space has been removed leaving more knee room even though seats are closer together allowing for more fare paying humans. Storage area is now behind fold down tray.
